How to Bring Back the Windows 95 Startup Sound on Windows 11 - MUO - MakeUseOf

Whenever Windows returns to action, it greets users with a jingle, and there may be no better greeting than the nostalgic Windows 95 startup sound. It is one of the most readily recognizable pieces of music from the 1990s and early 2000s.

Fortunately, you can relive the nostalgic feelings by bringing back the Windows 95 startup sound in Windows 11. We'll show you some simple ways to do it in this guide. Let's begin!

Step 1: Disable Fast Boot (If Applicable)

If your Windows 11 doesn't offer any jingle during startup, there are two reasons for this; either you have activated Fast Boot or don't have the Windows 11 startup sound feature enabled.

Let's begin with the first scenario.

Windows 10 and 11's Fast Startup feature helps your computer boot up more quickly after you shut it down. Instead of closing your computer completely, Fast Boot puts it into a hibernation state. If your computer can hibernate, then Fast Boot is enabled by default.

A fast startup can give PCs using hard drives (HDDs) a significant boost in startup speed, but they disable several features automatically, one of which is the startup sound. Having this feature on your PC will cause Windows to assume that you never shut down your PC, and hence it will play no startup sound.

If this scenario is applicable, here is how you can disable Fast Boot:

  1. Type Control Panel in the search area of your taskbar and hit Open.
    launch-control-panel
  2. In the Control Panel window, click on Power Options. If you cannot locate this option, click on View by and select Large icons.
    select-power-options-control-panel
  3. Now select Choose what the power buttons do and uncheck Turn on fast startup. If the option is grayed out, click Change Settings that are currently unavailable, then uncheck the option.

Once you do this, it is time to enable the startup sound feature on your operating system if it isn't already activated.

Step 2: Enable Windows 11 Startup Sound

The startup sound is enabled by default in Windows 11. This was the opposite of Windows 10, in which it was disabled by default.

If the startup sound feature is disabled on your Windows 11 operating system, you need to enable it to add the Windows 95 startup sound. Follow the steps listed below to do so:

  1. Right-click on the speaker icon located in the bottom-right corner of your taskbar and select Sound settings from the context menu. Alternatively, you can also type Change system sounds in the search area of your taskbar and click on Open to launch Sound settings.

  2. Scroll down in the right pane in the Sound settings window and select More sound settings. This should open a Sound dialog box.
    more-sound-settings
  3. Now head over to the Sounds tab in the dialog box and checkmark the Play Windows Start-up sound option. Doing so will allow Windows to start with a jingle every time you launch the operating system.

Step 3: Download Windows 95 Startup Sound

Since the Windows 95 startup sound is not available in the default sounds of Windows 11, you need to download it from an external source. The file you'll need is a ".wav" file. You can either download the startup sound as a .wav file or convert an existing audio file to one.

Here is how you can download Windows 95 startup sound as a .wav file:

  1. Launch your default browser and head over to Orange Free Sounds[2].
  2. Click on the green download button and wait for the file to download successfully. You can also check the sound quality by pressing the Play button on your screen under File Details.

  3. Once the file is downloaded, navigate to the download location in File Explorer and right-click on the downloaded file.
  4. Select Extract All from the context menu.
    extract-all

Now that you have your .wav file, you can replace the current Windows 11 startup sound with this nostalgic jingle.

Step 4: Add Windows 95 Startup Sound

Unfortunately, changing the startup sound in Windows 11 isn't as easy as enabling the feature. When writing this article, Windows 11 does not display the option for adding or changing the startup sound to the users, which is why we will be using the Windows Registry to enable this feature.

If you do not know already, Windows Registry is where advanced information about the programs and processes of Windows is stored. This information is available in the form of keys, and by modifying the relevant Registry keys, we can customize the operations of our operating system.

However, if you are planning to edit the Windows Registry, you might want to create a Registry backup[3] first, just in case.

Here is how you can add Windows 95 startup sound to Windows 11 by modifying the Registry Editor:

  1. Press Windows + R keys simultaneously on your keyboard to open a Run dialog box.
  2. Inside the text field of the dialog box, type regedit and hit Enter. This will launch Windows Registry on your PC.

  3. Select Yes in the User Account Control prompt.
  4. Once inside the Registry Editor, navigate to the location mentioned below.
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER/AppEvents/EventLabels/WindowsLogon
  5. Locate 'ExcludeFromCPL' in the right pane and double-click on it.
  6. Now type 0 under Value data and hit Enter to save the changes. This will allow Windows to display the hidden settings.
    excludefromcpl-key
  7. Once done, close the Registry Editor and right-click on the sound icon on the taskbar.
  8. Select Sound settings.
  9. Head over to the Sounds tab and select Windows Logon under Program Events.
  10. Now, click on the Browse button against it and navigate to the location where you saved the .wav file earlier.
    browse-computer-for-windows-95-startup-sound
  11. Select the downloaded file to add it.

  12. Alternatively, you can also launch File Explorer and paste your startup sound to C:\Windows\Media. You can change C to the drive letter of the drive on which your operating system is installed.
  13. Now that the Windows 95 startup sound is added to the list, click on Apply in the Sound dialog.
    apply-windows-95-startup-sounds
  14. Finally, restart your PC and upon reboot, check if Windows 95 greeting jingle plays instead of the latest one.

Windows 95 Startup Sound on Windows 11

By now, you should have successfully added the Windows 95 startup sound on Windows 11. In the future, if you change your mind and wish to turn the startup sound off, you can easily do this by modifying the Sound settings, as described in Step 2 above.
